Shoes, shoes, shoes: Perhaps not everyone knows that... curiosities about Italian shoes

Idolized, photographed and beloved by celebrities and by all of us, the Italian shoes are the joy of all the shoe addicted, but perhaps not everyone knows that…
Idolatrate, fotografate, amate e iper indossate dalle celebrities e da tutte noi, le scarpe italiane sono la gioia di tutte le show addicted, ma forse non tutti sanno che…

* The most expensive shoes in the world are Italian. It's a pair of Giuseppe Zanotti's sandals, realized in collaboration with Chopard for the last Festival of Cannes.
600 briolette in different nuances of pink for a total amount of 360 karats. Pink tourmalines and sapphires, diamonds and rubies transform the ankle strap of the shoe in a real jewel, in fact it can be removed from the shoes and be worn as a bracelet.
This treasure was sold by auction during the annual Amfar gala and the revenue of 140.000 euros was completely donated for the AIDS research.

* Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth and Marlene Dietrich had something in common… the passion for Salvatore Ferragamo's shoes, and for this reason he is regarded as the "Diva's shoemaker".
At Ferragamo Museum in Florence it is possible to admire the wooden forms that the master used to create customized shoes for the Divas, as well as some memorabilia. These include the famous pink pumps worn by Marilyn in Cukor's movie "Let's make love" (1960). These 9-cm heels gave her the typical sensual walk that drove (and still drive) men crazy all over the world.

* Italian invented perfumed shoes, the Brio Italiano's ballerinas. These ballerinas are made of recyclable rubber, perfumed with Mediterranean essences and scents inspired by the Amalfitans coast.

* The platform is an art, and Italian master shoemakers know how to interpret it. For this reason the MOMA in NYC dedicated to the Italian platforms the exposition "INNER TREASURES - The secret story of a fashionable platform in Italy", a celebration of platforms, from the 30's to nowadays.

* In Elsa Schiapparelli's brilliant surrealistic mind, a pair of shoes could be transformed in a hat.

* Also sculptures can express the art of the Italian shoes. The Italian sculptor Graziano Spinosi has realized 20 pairs of shoes with poor materials and industrial wastes, and dedicated them to 20 famous artists. Spinosi's "patocche" (that is the name of his work) are a way of interpreting the artist's life and representing it as a pair of shoes. For this reason Marta Graham's "patocche" are made of glass mosaic and Le Corbusier's ones are made of reinforced concrete.

* Le scarpe più preziose del mondo sono italiane, si tratta di un paio di sandali realizzati da Giuseppe Zanotti in collaborazione con Chopard e presentati all'ultimo Festival di Cannes.

600 briolette in varie sfumature di rosa per un totale di 360 carati. Tormaline e zaffiri rosa, diamanti e rubini fanno brillare il cinturino del sandalo, che può essere rimosso e indossato come braccialetto.

Questo tesoro è stato battuto all'asta all'annuale cena organizzata da cinema against AIDS per la cifra record di 140.000 euro, integralmente devoluti all'Amfar.

* Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth e Marlene Dietrich avevano tutte una passione in comune … per le italianissime scarpe di Salvatore Ferragamo, che non a caso si è guadagnato il soprannome di "calzolaio delle dive".

Al Museo Ferragamo di Firenze si possono ammirare le forme in legno personalizzate che il maestro usava per creare le scarpe alle divine, oltre ad alcuni cimeli. Tra questi le famose decolleté rosa ricoperte di strass indossate da Marilyn nel film "Let's make love" (1960) di Cukor; stiletti tacco 9 che davano all'attrice quell'andatura ancheggiante che ha fatto e fa ancora impazzire gli uomini di mezzo mondo.

* Gli italiani hanno inventato delle scarpe che profumano. Si tratta delle ballerine di Brio Italiano, realizzate in gomma riciclabile e profumata con essenze ispirate al mediterraneo e ai profumi della costiera amalfitana.

* Il plateau è un'arte, e i mastri calzaturieri italiani la interpretano alla perfezione. Per questo il MOMA di New York ha dedicato loro la mostra "INNER TREASURES - The secret story of a fashionable platform in Italy", una celebrazione del plateau,  dagli anni trenta ai giorni nostri.

* Nella geniale mente surrealista di Elsa Schiaparelli un paio di scarpe possono anche trasformarsi in un capello.

* L'arte delle scarpe italiane si esprime anche nella scultura. Graziano Spinosi, artista romagnolo che sperimenta con i materiali, ha ideato 20 scarpe dedicate ad altrettanti artisti e realizzate con materiali poveri e di scarto industriale. Le "patocche" di Spinosi (questo il nome delle sue opere) interpretano la vita dell'artista e la rappresentano sotto forma di scarpa. Così le patacche di Marta Graham sono in mosaico di vetro, mentre quelle di Le Corbusier in cemento armato.

Shoes, shoes, shoes: when shoes become art

Stylish, elegant, unique and able to make you feel like a Diva; shoes have always been my weak point. Raise your hand if you have never passed by a shopping window and heard a pair of shoes whispering your name, as the sirens did to Ulysses. It is something you can´t resist and I am sure you know this very well too! 

As a real shoe addict I had to take part in the “Bloggers love italian shoes” competition, promoted by ANCI. From now until September 5th some of my posts are going to be dedicated to Italian shoes, and I’ve decided to start with a tribute to “art in shoes” .

Sinuose, eleganti, uniche e capaci di farti sentire una vera diva; le scarpe sono da sempre il mio punto debole.

Ma chi può dire di essere passata di fronte ad una vetrina e non aver mai sentito un paio di scarpe sussurrare il proprio nome, come facevano le sirene con Ulisse? È un richiamo a cui è assolutamente impossibile resistere e sono sicura che anche voi lo conoscete bene! 

Da vera e propria shoe addicted non potevo quindi non partecipare al concorso "Bloggers love italian shoes", promosso da ANCI. Da qui al 5 settembre alcuni dei miei post saranno dedicati alle scarpe italiane, e ho deciso di iniziare con un vero e proprio tributo “all'arte nelle scarpe”.

SHOE: f.n. one of a pair of coverings for your feet, usually made of a strong material such as leather, with a thick leather or plastic sole (= base) and usually a heel

But shoes are not only something you can have on your feet, sometimes they are a masterpiece of style and creativity, unique, iconic and precious, able to inspire the Italian genius.

The obsesssion for quality, the love for handicraft, and even the research of perfect forms and geometries lead to the creation of real “chef d´oeuvre”, every bit as good as museums masterpieces.

Here are a couple of examples: Ferragamo's invisible sandal recall the geometric shapes of a Balla painting. Segio Zambon's banana-heels remind you the cover of Velvet Underground´s “banana-album” designed by Andy Warhol, don’t they? And the legendary Alberto Guardiani's lipstick heel can be seen as a hommage to Roy Lichtenstein´s art , can’t it?

Pieces of contemporary art that could be admired in a museum or on the feet of all the shoes addicts.

SCARPA: n.f. [pl. -e] calzatura di vario tipo, di cuoio o di altro materiale, che protegge il piede fino alla caviglia o, in certe fogge, anche più su.

Ma la scarpa non é solo un oggetto da indossare ai piedi, a volte diventa un vero e proprio capolavoro di stile e creatività, iconico, prezioso, spesso unico, capace di esaltare ed esaltarsi con il genio italico.

L'ossessione per la qualità e l'amore per l'artigianalità, ma anche la ricerca della geometria e della forma perfetta portano alla creazione di veri e propri “chef d'oeuvre”, con nulla da invidiare alle opere d'arte esposte nei musei.

Solo per fare alcuni esempi: il sandalo invisibile di Ferragamo, pezzo forte del museo fiorentino della griffe, rievoca il gioco di forze e geometrie delle tele di Balla, il tacco-banana di Sergio Zambon non vi riporta subito alla mente la mitica copertina del “banana album” dei Velvet Underground disegnata da Andy Warhol? Mentre l'ormai famigerato tacco rossetto di Alberto Guardiani potrebbe essere interpretato come un omaggio alle atmosfere pop di Roy Lichtenstein.

Pezzi d'arte contemporanea, da ammirare nei musei ma anche ai piedi di tutte le shoe addicted.
