Alisa Gould-Simon has covered fashion for the likes of The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. She’s run her own fashion consulting agency, and now she’s director of marketing and communications for Pose.com, an awesome social-shopping site you should probably join. Basically, when it comes to fashion, she knows what’s up, and the longtime New York resident moved to L.A. a year and a half ago. Here, she expounds on the joys of her new locale, like actually having space to entertain and living in flats. Not going to lie—we’re a little jealous. —nathalie
Q: How do people dress in L.A.?
A: No one wears heels in L.A. unless they’re really dressing it up. There’s a relaxed undertone to all the fashion. In a way, it’s disjointed. L.A. is such a sprawling city that the fashion community kind of reflects that—it offers people a lot of space literally and figuratively to be creative, to play, to work outside the fashion bubble.
Q: What’s the fashion scene like socially? Are people close?
A: I have a group of friends—L.A. ladies who are all New York expats who work in fashion. It’s nice, because relationships within the fashion community tend to be really close. Also, because you have more space, people have more domestic gatherings.
Q: Who are your favorite L.A. designers?
A: Definitely Society for Rational Dress. I’ve known Corinne for a while now, and she just has a very interesting take on design in general—architecture and art are big influences. [Ed: Check out our edition from her here.] I’m also really into Tanya Aguiñiga’s stuff. She’s being doing amazing rope accessories. Kelly Bergin’s burgeoning line is a favorite of the rising stars on the L.A. fashion scene. Her work calls to mind both Céline and Helmut Lang. But Bergin’s line also has a chic-yet-effortless bent that feels totally unique…and totally L.A.
