Back-to-Back The Lake & Stars

images via Refinery 29, photos by Kava Gorna

Though we typically don't feature a designer's collections until it's available in stores, we made an exception for The Lake & Stars.  We figure that if Refinery 29 can do it, so will we!  The Fall 2011 collection was unveiled as part of NYFW and we are definitely in love.  The designers Nikki Dekker and Maayan Zilberman made a point of showing that their designs look fantastic on most body types, not just lanky models.  We hope you enjoy this sneak peek as much as we do, and we look forward to doing an in-depth look at the collection once it hits our sales floor this August (but in the meantime, to learn more about their inspiration for their latest designs, visit their blog here).

The Lake & Stars - Shop-in-Room

We typically showcase the latest collections from The Lake & Stars, but this time around we want to showcase the place where you can see The Lake & Stars in all its glory: Vancouver's Waldorf Hotel.  The newly renovated hotel has a room dedicated to this fashion-forward lingerie label with a theme/decor that will change seasonally with each collection.  It is probably every designer's dream to have their creations displayed with such exclusivity.  The shop-in-room launched in January 2011 and the above pictures display the slightly fetish-inspired Fall/Winter pieces.  The last image is a glimpse at the current Spring 2011 season, which can be seen in its entirety here
So, who's going to make the trek to Vancouver to see the mini shop...it certainly is enticing now that The Lake & Stars is there!

The Lake & Stars; Like a Stockings Fetish Film

images via The Lake & Stars, photography Tom Hines

The Lake & Stars turns up the risque-factor with its new Fall/Winter 2010 collection and yet another memorable set of images in its lookbook.  We kind of get a 70's porn vibe from it, but in a good way of course!  Designers Nikki and Maayan manage to capture their signature style in a fresh new set of designs, which consists of several amazing sets of bras, panties and rompers/bodysuits...and now open stockings (our delicate way of saying crotchless) and 'open' garter panties.  There are even some new textures in the Fall collection with the addition of the knit romper and knit blanket!  Overall we think this is a very strong collection, and we can safely say that The Lake & Stars just gets better each season (and it was great to begin with!).
We should also note that this season's catalogue was shot by photographer Tom Hines, who is responsible for the now iconic images from the Spring/Summer 2010 lookbook (we posted about here).

We hope that by now all of our readers have seen Sex & the City 2 (SATC 2), and if not, you need to go see it! Granted, it wasn't the best movie in the world, but it's just so much fun to see our 4 favorite females together and in dozens of wardrobe changes. It's inspiring seeing so much glamour, and kind of fun predicting how the movie will affect fashion trends.
We had a great time identifying the lingerie in the film...it kind of felt like lingerie detective work. Carrie Bradshaw is the queen of perfectly layering her bra as outerwear, and really exemplifies the importance of glam underpinnings.
We are pleased to congratulate the small group of lingerie brands that made it into the film: Marlies Dekkers, Hanro, Eres, Huit, The Lake & Stars, Carine Gilson, La Fee Verte, Cosabella, On Gossamer and vintage Calvin Klein.
On a side note, we received word that a Fleur of England bra (called Raspberry Lace) was selected by Sarah Jessica Parker for the film, but apparently we just didn't see it...we wonder which dress it was concealed under! We were also told that SJP requested to keep the bra after filming wrapped for her personal collection (lucky gal).

The Lake & Stars; Double in Brass

specialty photos by Tom Hines, product photos via here

The Lake & Stars is one of those lingerie brands that immediately shot to fame shortly after being developed. Even people who aren't big lingerie fans know what The Lake & Stars is all about (perhaps it was their exposure in the Sex & the City movie). Nonetheless, it was only a matter of time before major clothing chain Urban Outfitters commissioned an exclusive collection by the brand. The capsule collection, aptly titled Double in Brass (meaning to take on a 2nd job) has the signature TLS style at a price more agreeable to the masses. It's very much a underwear as outerwear group with the fun details we have come to expect from designers Nikki and Maayan.

The Lake & Stars - Spring 2010

Photographer: Tom Hines, Model: Nell Rebowe, Hair & Makeup: Fernando Haddad, Prop Stylist: Jesse Kaufmann

We have been patiently waiting since September 2009 to share these images with you from the SS2010 collection by The Lake & Stars (you may have spotted them months ago elsewhere but we don't like showing a collection prematurely out of respect for the designer). Let's just say we were floored by the amazing job the ladies behind The Lake & Stars did in putting the Spring lookbook together. Designers Nikki and Maayan teamed with the talented photographer Tom Hines whose conceptual vision made their dazzling new collection look like a spread in W Magazine.
Putting this type of effort into a catalogue makes such a difference for a designer; the branding, the attention to detail and the concept are seamlessly displayed to capture the attention of the consumer and the fashion world. Memorable images like this really set The Lake & Stars apart from many of their contemporaries.
Take a look at the rest of the images on The Lake & Stars website...there are captions and a bit of a dangerous story that go along with them.

Also, the brand has launched a sister line called "Double in Brass" which will be sold exclusively at Urban Outfitters throughout 2010. It is a younger, more contemporary collection of lingerie and loungewear. The phrase “Double in Brass” is a Victorian term for taking on a second job...very clever, just like everything these ladies do!
